Natural source of organic, bioavailable selenium
Selsaf® is a natural source of bioavailable organic selenium obtained from a proprietary yeast strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain CNCM I-3399. It is cultivated on a medium enriched with sodium selenite which is bio-transformed into organic form by yeast cells, ensuring a consistent composition of selenocysteine (SeCys) and selenomethionine (SeMet), both of which are major active selenocompounds.
The production process used for Selsaf® guarantees a high concentration of organic Selenium and a consistent active seleno-compound profile. This helps to protect the body against oxidative stress, both in the short and long term.
As a feed material, Selsaf® can only be fed as part of a finished commercial feed or complementary supplement.
Unique to SelSaf: Two modes of action
- Immediate - Selenocysteine offers rapidly available Selenium to protect against oxidative stress via selenoenzymes.
- Longer term - Seleno-Methionine (63% present in Selsaf®) is incorporated and stored in the muscles, where it can be utilised in times of stress. When oxidative stress occurs and the body’s own natural anti-oxidant supplies are not able to cope, Seleno-Methionine is released from this muscle reserve and used for the production of the animal’s seleno-enzymes (Schrauzer, 2000).
